You may remember a while back i was whining about not knowing perl scripts and other nonsense like that, well i have decided to go with typepad as my new home. My new blog address is www.superstitch.typepad.com I will soon have my personal site, www.superstitchious.com configured to redirect to my blog, but that involves a phone call to bluehost tech support during business hours.

For my last post on blogger i will share with you one of my favorite art projects, "My little pony in space" , I made this for a swap on craftster. After i signed up to make a customized pony, my mind went blank. It was only when i was on one of my many tours through hobby lobby when i found a cord of battery operated blinking lights. I thought they looked just like stars. My big plan was to cut the pony open from the bottom and shove the lights inside, but i severley overestimated the size of these "little" ponies. So one wooden fram and mat board later and ta da! My little pony in space was born! She has all 10 planets on her body, i believe that is jupiter on her hip and earth on her front hoof. She of course also sports an electric red mohawk, perfect for space travel! I hope i see you all at my new address!

Box full of cute!

I love sending people fun things in the mail. I love it when i get surprises so why not make those surprises happen for everyone else? This is for Jane in Australia, so this package has a ways to go. Jane if you're seeing this, the bottom picture will ruin half of the surprise......

I also really like wrapping presents, when it comes to the holidays I am always in charge of wrapping everyone's presents. If there was a career to be made in present wrapping I would be doing it. I found the orange and red wrapping paper at oldnavy on sale for 2 dollars. These little guys are made from felt and were inspired by the recipients wist list. I couldn't come up with a good way to have the fortune removable so on one of them i sewed a little tab of white to look like a fortune sticking out. If anyone has any ideas for the future about how to get the fortune to be able to come out and then go back in, please let me know! Also, if anyone is interested in how they are made let me know, they're super simple and i might right up a little mini tutorial for them!

Countdown to Christmas.......

The countdown for christmas begins with the halloween season for me. I work in a fabric store so i've been helping people with costumes all week long. I love the fall because the whole month of october is filled with halloween, november with thanksgiving, and of course all leading up to december with Christmas. I know alot of people get stressed out about christmas and say that its no fun, but i love it. Maybe its because i still feel like a little kid around christmas and my family's christmas traditions are so set that i cant imagine spending a christmas any other way. The first picture is from 1996 or 1997 i cant tell. (i'm on the far right) This picture represents christmas to me. I'm with my three sisters and my two cousins and my granny. Every christmas eve we go to my aunts house, we eat dinner, listen to music, talk and then open presents. Its just always a great time, and even though we're all loud and dont get along all of the time we just have the best time ever.

The bottom picture is a more recent picture, maybe 2 years ago. (I'm second from left, the little boy is my brother) We're in the same exact room, just sitting on the couch across from the tree instead of infront of it. I have so many pictures of all of us in that room opening presents and having a great time.

So I guess what got me started on this whole christmas rant is the halloween season, and the fact that we are being hit with a cold front right now. Its going to be 60 tomorrow! (i may have to break out a long sleeved tshirt) I've started planning out my christmas gifts, and we've started to decorate the store for thanksgiving and christmas. I know for some its a little early to be thinking about christmas, but for me, every month is part of the countdown to christmas!

A calendar quilt

This is my latest work in progress, a calendar quilt, one block for every month. This is the december block, i'm not doing them in any particular order, just whatever fabrics i have on hand that will work with the pattern. I found the patterns for these blocks through a craft-a-long on craftster. I dont think that the quilt will be very practical because of all the stitching on the top makes it a little stiff and rough, but i think its going to look great, very rustic and folk art with the rough edge applique and the blanket stitch. The christmas lights and the rope the dog has in its mouth were embroidered on. Everything else was machine appliqued.

Here is my July block, i haven't decided if i'm done with it yet. I think the dog needs a collar, and the house may get a mail box. I'll be posting more of these throughout the week as i make them!

My first quilt show!

I went to the Austin Area Quilt Guild's show today and it was great! Everyone seems to have things so together, with great photos of great project, photographed in their clean, well decorated houses. I wish i led the same life, but mine is messy. I attempted to decorate and gave my craft room a good cleaning and organizing a month ago. But i never quite finished because i wanted to get back to creating things instead of cleaning things. Creating things like the table runner i mentioned in my last post. Now normally when i upload my photos i spend time cropping. Cropping out my messy life, but tonight you can see a little bit of it. You can also see my daily uniform of skirt and flip flops!

The table runner has been basted and a few of the squares have been quilted. I decided to outline quilt each triangle and a square swirl (is that such a thing) on the squares. Anyways if you click the picture you'll have a better idea of what i'm talking about. I really love all of the fabrics from this charm pack although i wish there was a bigger variety of small, medium and large prints, i feel like there is not a lot of print contrast in the runner, although i definitely love the colors. I have a lot of little triangle scraps left over and i think they are going to be a matching pot holder. The last picture is of my favorite square in this project and the quilting.

Christmas in September

I know its too early to be thinking about christmas, but i cant help myself, i LOVE christmas. Its not even close to halloween yet and i already joined an ornament swap on craftster. These three little trees are for my swap partners. I had so many ideas flying around my head for all of the different ornaments i wanted to make, but i finally settled on these. I really like them and think that a taller version would look great on a mantle. These little guys are about 4 - 5 inches tall. They each have two buttons sewn to the top instead of the traditional star and a little loop for hanging. I'm going to be sad to see these guys go, i used up the last of my scraps of my favorite christmas fabric. I used that fabric last year for my grandmothers christmas quilt. Its really strange how attached i get to fabrics, there are some that i just cant cut up because i love them too much. I'm afraid i'm not going to use them in the right project, or that i will find something better to do with them. I have a little fabric museum in my sewing room! Stacks of pretty fabric all waiting for a project.

One of my new little stacks of fabrics is this great charm pack i bought at honeybee quilt store in austin. Its 45 5inch squares and i'm going to make a table runner for my mom's best friend, Pam. The fabrics are so gorgeous in person, a lot of orange, brown, blue and cream. I think that this table runner would be great for fall and thanksgiving, but Pam's dining room features alot of oranges and browns so i think she'll be able to use this throughout the year. I should have this done soon, so i'll be sure to show y'all how it turns out!

On the needles

And i'm back! School has started and I'm struggling to keep up and on top of things to make sure i graduate in December. I haven't been doing a lot of sewing lately. I've moved more to small, quick to finish and portable projects. I've been working on some christmas ornaments, small paper collages and my first ever knitted garment. I'm working on eunny jang's argyle sweater vest. Here is my vest so far, the pattern is fun to knit and interesting enough to keep me going which is key. This is my first time doing fair isle and its not really hard although the back of my knitting is not looking very good, alot of my strands are either pulled too tight or are too loose. I'm sure i'll figure it out right as i'm finishing the vest, thats how it always happens. The colors are charcoal and a pale pale purpley pink. The brand is baby bee, sweet delight baby yarn. It is 100% acrylic which i know makes all of the knitters of the world gasp at the blashpemy of it all, but i didn't want to spend a ton of money on nice yarn on my first big knit project. Its knitting up alot quicker than i thought it would, although i'm a little afraid of the finishing. There are things like steeks and adding a neckline and arm holes to do once the vest is knitted. Since this is the first non scarf/dishcloth that i've done it will be a big learning experience. I'll keep ya'll posted!

Cutting and Pasting, not just for kindergarten

So i've never really thought of myself as an artist, a sewer yes, a quilter yes, crocheter, knitter, gluer and the list goes on. I've really been inspired by the little Artist Trading Card's i've seen on craftster and i decided that i would try and get in on the fun. I got a little nervous at first because i cant paint and i cant draw, which are two very important area's of art. So anyways, since i have superstitchious.com just sitting there, i think i'm going to move my blog over there. It sounds easy enough right? Nope, i've just read through the installation guide for installing movable type and well, i just dont have the technical capabilities. So anyways, i think the point of all of this is that i will be moving this little blog to superstitchious.com in the future, not real sure how soon that will be, but it will happen!

In the meantime here is a photo album i've put up in my etsy shop. The first things i moved in and set up were my sewing and craft supplies, but i never got around to decorating. I've had such a busy summer that i just recently got around to unpacking all of my cute little things. This is one of my little display shelves. I tried to use bright and colorful things since i cant paint the walls. The fun little green storage container, green and pink kitty painting, and pink heart box came from a pink swap i did on craftster. The blue ceramic dress and the beaded ivory dress form were birthday presents from my sister. I made the hot pink doily and my latest project, the paisley journal. After my last post about the first two journals i made, i've been working on perfecting my journal making process. I'm so happy with how this paisley journal turned out that its going to be the first one i list in my etsy shop.

Speaking of pink and green, I went to visit my sister this weekend and to help her settle into her dorm. She shares my addiction with new bedding so, of course, we went shopping. She already had a few pink and minty green accents so thats what we went looking for, i think we found it!

We found the green striped pillow and went from there. The green curtain is made from a nautica flat sheet that was on clearance. You could never get enough fabric by the yard for the price of that sheet!

Back to School

Today was the first day of the fall semester, it also happens to be my last semester as i graduate in december. I was fidgety and bored last night so of course i sat down at my desk and made something! Usually my spur of the moment craft projects dont turn into anything useful or cute, but i was pretty excited with what i did last night!
I've made journals before, but I made them with fabric covers, this time i wanted to try a traditional hard cover. The newspaper journal was the first i made, and i think it came out really nice. The second one I made to celebrate going back to school. I dont know if you can tell from the picture but there is a quarter button on the lower right of the journal.

I made the apple journal a little different, I laid down a layer of thin batting before i wrapped it in fabric. I like the way it is slightly puffy on the front, but i dont know if i like how it looks on the inside. The first decorative page doesn't lay as flat as it does on the newspaper journal. I'm thinking about making some of these to list in my etsy store, but i haven't made up my mind. I dont know if my book binding and book making skills are as advanced as other sellers on etsy. I love making these little books though, so i may just keep practicing until i'm comfortable enough to list them.

As for the sock in my previous post, I did finish them that day, but i had an airhead moment and i gave them away before i could take a picture of the finished project. Oops! I'm working on a pair of socks for me, so hopefully i'll manage to get a picture of those!

My first pair of socks, almost

I have a new friend and a new addiction! Thanks to Deb at Fearless Fibers i am addicted to knitting socks. Its kind of crazy because i'm not a knitter. I know how to knit and purl enough to make a scarf but i had never attempted anything else, especially not socks! Socks look very intimidating and scary but really they're not so bad. I used this site to help me through my first practice sock. The site has really good, clear instructions, and explain the different things you'll find in a basic sock pattern.

The almost finished socks in the picture are for seth's mom, rhea ann. Her birthday is tomorrow, so i'm going to be up late tonight finishing up the second sock. I like to do something hand made for her every year because she is a crafty person too and appreciates all things hand made. I made her a quilt last year for her birthday so i knew i wasn't going to be able to top that. But i think she will like the socks. I'll find out tomorrow!

Pretty in pink, quilt top

So here is what i have come up with for my wonderful fabrics. I was flipping through my denyse schmidt book and got inspired. Alot of the new modern quilts call for a lot of solids in big pieces, while i think it looks really cool, I personally love prints. So this quilt is a departure from the norm for me. I adapted this from the big zig pattern and i really love how the zig zags of prints work with the solid pink and brown. One fat quarter was perfect for one row of zig zag. The finished size of this quilt is going to be 60 inches by 82 inches, twin size.

The quilt is hanging on my wall by the corners which is why there is some weird pulling across the center seam. I think the the zig zags worked with prints, you can definitely see the seam in the close up picture, but i think one everything is quilted it wont be as noticeable. I did my best to try to match up the dots, but i only had a fat quarter and had to work with as little waste as possible.

I pieced the back today, and layed the quilt out and basted everything together. I was going to attempt to quilt it on my home machine but i dont think its going to work. There is a quilt store about 20 minutes away that rents time on their handi quilter long arm, they also offer a class on how to use it. I think thats what i'm going to do for this quilt since i'm just going to follow the same quilting pattern denyse schmidt used in her book. I'll let ya'll know how it works out!

I need help!!

Calling all quilters, i need help. I have a really bad problem with buying fabrics that i love but the dont want to cut up. I'm always afraid that i'm going to ruin the fabric with bad ideas. But i dont like it when my pretty new fabric just sits there staring at me. So now i really need help, i bought these 5 amazing Heather Ross fatquarters from Emerald City Fabric and Craft and i would really like to use them in a quilt.

These fabrics called my name because they represent my favorite color combos, pink and orange and a little bit of brown. The tricycles, which i love, could probably be left out of the quilt design just because they're slightly more childish than the other prints. I really need help findinng a quilt pattern that would show off these wonderful prints but that would make a fairly large quilt, I dont like to make lap quilts. I want something that covers my feet. More yardage of these fabrics can be obtained if the pattern calls for it. I do have a large stash of pinks reds, a few oranges that i could throw into the mix, but since i'm such a huge fan of these prints i dont want to do too much to take away from them.

If anyone has any ideas at all please, please help me out. My sister pointed out that "tying one on" has to do with getting drunk, but i think i' m going to stick with the name anyways, i have no idea what else i would call them! I'm working on making 50 of them to send off to the sampler, 10 down, 40 to go!

My new favorite quick craft of the moment are these super cool mini scrap books. I received a how to kit from Dawn as part of a thank you gift for a swap I did. I'm love to collect scrabbooking papers and supplies when they are onsale at michaels but i never do much with them, i'm more of a sewer. I just love all the prints that they put on paper, so this is a perfect little project. Here are the four I made this weekend, they are about 4.5 x 4.5 inches

Here is one opened up, the inside paper is folded and glued so that it opens accordion style instead of page by page. I will post pictures of it once she receives, and when my camera has new batteries! Lasandri did a really amazing job using the colors I wanted and the kitschy nature I wanted without making it look cheesy or cartoony. Once i have more of an idea of where i want my personal site to go, i think i may have to look into some of her more advanced services!

I know that the picture looks a little fuzzy here but its configured for my etsy shop where it looks amazing, I'm no good with pictures, so i apologize to lasandri if it looks a little fuzzy here.

Let me know what you think of my banner!!

I joined the Modern Quilt Along over at Dioramarama, so i wanted to show you guys which quilt i picked and what i'm working on. The quilt pattern is called Marquee, and its a really fast and easy to put together quilt. I really love the colors of this quilt in the book, I dont know why i didn't just use them, instead I picked my own, and now i dont know if i like them. So heres a few of the blocks i threw together to see how it was looking.

The main background fabric is a light pink paisley, i think the picture shows it a little more purple than it is. I picked out the pink background first and then decided on brown as an accent.

I picked out a range of browns and tans, and then threw a couple of bright prints with brown accents. I cant decide if i like it yet, but we'll see.

Princess Starshell has a new home

Here is my entry for the whiplash competition over at Whipup. My parents are taking me, Seth and my sisters and brother to the beach this weekend, for some swimming and some fishing. I take crochet with me every where, class, work, to the movies, and of course the beach! I dont think i will take the crochet fishing though, Princess Starshell doesn't need a smelly blanket. So I wanted to make a fun new crochet bag that looked like a beach bag! I think I accomplished that with these fun bright colors!

Here is a side view of the bag, its about 4 inches deep. The reason i think this bag belongs in the skill category is because of all the modifications and upgrades I made to a basic square bottom tote. There is a large pocket across the front of the bag for holding trashy magazines that you only read on vacation. There are two narrow pockets on each side of the bag for pens, or extra crochet hooks. On the inside i made a fairly deep slash pocket to hold a pair of scissors, or anything else that doesn't need to tangle up the yarn.

And here is the afghan in her happy new home, you can see the hook poking out of the slash pocket. I'm afraid my afghan may outgrow the bag by the end of the weekend, she's getting big, i'll have to post updated pictures soon.

So here's what i've been doing the past few days....

I made the quilt top a few months ago and never got around to quilting it. Because, let's face it, you need my help. (Oh my God, I am so just kidding. I love you!) (Or am I? Do I?) (I am. And I do.) (Okay. I'm done.)

-First of all, CRAFTSTER.ORG! I think I might have been the last crafter on Earth (or Uranus... hahaha) to hear of the Craftster forums, but oh man, am I glad I did. Got a question that's even tangentially related to any form of craft or art? A quick search on Craftster will yield you all you ever wanted to know and more. It's a great place to show off your stuff and receive feedback, and to learn all about various techniques you're interested in. The forum is well organized and enormous, and the people are super friendly and helpful. I love it. I also love the Swap forum, where you can sign up to craft around a specific theme for another person who, in turn, crafts for you. You end up with a lot of really cool stuff and the satisfaction of giving someone else something really cool.

-Next up, my XYRON STICKER MAKER. I am in love with it. Seriously. We'll be announcing our engagement any day now. It was only $7.99 at Wal Mart (you'll pay about $5 for replacement cartridges) and will make stickers out of anything flat and an inch and a half or less wide. I've used it to make stickers out of magazine and newspaper clippings, computer printouts, random doodles, shapes cut out of cardstock, and even fabric. This thing is AMAZING. You'll be suprised how many different things you want to put stickers on once you can make them yourself.

-Another link in my favorites list is TACKORAMA.NET. First off, everything on the site is free, which fits riiiight into my budget, and secondly, everything on the site is awesome. There are retro/vintage fonts, dingbats, clipart, stock photography, wallpapers, and more. I use a lot of Tack-o-rama stuff in my (poorly executed, few and far between) graphic design endeavors, and they always make things look extra-classy. I also like to print random stuff out from that site to use as embroidery patterns.

-POPGADGET.NET is a blog with multiple contributers all about what they call "personal tech for women." It is about that and so, so much more. For example, on their front page right now they have news about the new Google Click-to-play ads, mp3 player sunglasses and shoes, a new portable DVD player, and a novelty mouse. The writing is concise and witty, and they feature some truly interesting/useful/bizarre stuff. If not for PopGadget, I would have never known about the upcoming Nintendo Edition of Monopoly. And trust me, that is something I needed to know about.

-I'm pretty sure that in my version of heaven there will still be REPRODEPOT.COM. I have to actually limit my visits to that site because every time I look at it I find at least 15 new things that I want to buy. They sell the most adorable buttons, ribbons, patterns, and fabrics on the web. I want to use their fabrics for every project I attempt, and were it economically feasible, I probably would.

Speaking of projects I'm attempting, here's some stuff I'm doing:

-I was so inspired by these Log Cabin pillows that I've decided to try my hand at, well, not a pillow, exactly, but a pin cushion. It's a work in progress, but I'm liking the way it's looking. Once I've perfected them (give me a week or so) I'll probably be listing a few in My Store.

Funny tangent: When I told one of my sisters that I was making a log cabin pin cushion she thought I was constructing a tiny little home fit for the likes of Johnny Appleseed or Paul Bunyan or whatever out of brown felt. She, obviously, is not a quilter.

I really dig log cabin stuff. I've got big plans for it. I think I'm going to work on sixteen inch pillows and even journals like these other ones I've been working on for my store.

-I really love these journals. They're the perfect way to get rid of all my good-sized scraps of fabric, and they're so deceptively simple to make! Well, the paper folding can be a bitch, but I get through it. I've already sold two, but I had a hard time letting them go!

Okay, I can hear tiny little kitten voices begging for me to come and play with them, so I'll end this here.

Happy crafting! (Oh, was that a little too... yeah. From now on I'll just say have a nice day.)

Princess Starshell Has a Blanket!

Okay, actually, the afghan I'm working on right now is just called a Star Shell afghan, but doesn't that sound like some crazy friend of Sailor Moon or a lost Nintendo princess being held captive by Bowser in his fiery dungeon of doom that Mario and Luigi just totally like, forgot about?

I thought so.

First things first:

I'm working from this pattern from citiusa.com, except I've doubled the pattern, which will make my finished afghan six feet wide and six and a half feet long. I'm a tall chick, I like my feet to be covered.

I'm using some awesome Simply Soft Caron brand yarn, and it is working out just perfectly. This brand comes in tons of colors, it's washable, it's super cheap, just $1.99 for six ounces, and it truly is Simply Soft.

I come from a long line of crocheters... well, my grandmother and my mom both crocheted... is three people considered a long line? In the grocery store it is when the people in front of you have full carts and at least one screaming child each and you only have a bag of limes and a loaf of bread and you're already steamed they didn't just let you go first, but then they pull out a wad of coupons and OH MY GOD a handful of change and that's when the vein in your forehead starts throbbing but stabbing people in grocery stores is so last week, so you have to content yourself with the weapons of the passive aggressive; tapping your foot, rolling your eyes, and sighing loudly approximately every fifteen seconds, and... where the hell was I? Oh right, grandmother. Mom. Both crocheted. I do too.

The point is that crocheting is tied up in associations with a lot of good things in my head, so doing it, although it takes a while to finish a project, is actually really relaxing and fun for me. Plus it's so easy to learn, and just like riding a bike, you have to actively try to forget how to do it, and it's easy to pick up and put down, so you can just grab spare moments between Roseanne reruns and cleaning the litterbox, and knock out a star shell or two. My goal is a stripe a day, and if I stick to it then I've only got forty five days left, which means when I'm finished it will kind of still be summer, which means that my color choices will still be appropriate. Hooray!

You can check out my progress here, I'm about a third of the way done:

and see a close up of the detail here:

My official entrance into the blogosphere

Well, I never thought that I'd be one of those people with a blog, but it seems like everyone else in the world has one now, so I figured, what the hell?

Actually, this blog is long overdue, if you think about it. I've got opinions to share and views to express and, you know, adorable handmade purses, wallets, quilts, journals, and more to sell (seriously, check them out).

But really, this blog will just be filled with tutorials on how to make awesome things, pictures of my (adorable) cats and kittens, reviews of new and classic crafty tools, links to fabric, patterns, and other assorted goodstuff online, and general musings on my life and the state of affairs in Washington...

Just kidding. This isn't that kind of blog.
